Jen is up one night, anxiously waiting for her 18-year-old son to return home. Through the window, she sees him approaching, but before he can reach the door, a stranger crosses his path—and in a moment that shatters her world, he commits an unthinkable crime right before her eyes. Shocked and heartbroken, Jen struggles to understand how her beloved son could do something so horrifying. But the next morning brings an even greater surprise—it isn’t tomorrow, it’s yesterday. From that moment on, she begins to move backwards through time, determined to uncover the truth and perhaps prevent the tragedy from ever happening.
Without revealing too much about the plot, let’s move on to another aspect of the book—the writing. I truly admired the author’s style. The language is accessible, though at some points, it may cause a bit of confusion due to the unconventional narrative structure. The story unfolds in reverse, mirroring the protagonist’s journey as she wakes up each day further in the past. As a reader, I had to piece together clues in reverse order, which was both intriguing and mentally engaging. There’s even a point where Jen travels back over seven thousand days—before she even met her husband—which adds an unexpected emotional depth.
While the writing and narration are strong, I found the second half of the book slightly dragged. There’s noticeable repetition of previously revealed information, which at times felt unnecessary and slowed the pace. I understand the need to revisit specific details for coherence, but the frequency of these repetitions affected the reading flow. I also felt it took around 20–25 pages for the story to find its rhythm; once it did, the plot became gripping and immersive.
Despite these minor drawbacks, it’s undeniably a page-turner. I would certainly recommend this book to thriller enthusiasts, especially those who enjoy time-travel narratives with emotional depth and psychological intrigue.
My Rating:
4/5
