Eileen “Elsy” Merriweather is a part-time English professor with a deep love for happily-ever-afters—though only the fictional kind. After all, bookish heroes never leave you standing at the altar. For Elsy, the safest place has always been within the pages of a novel, which is why she looks forward to her annual book club retreat with such excitement. Her beloved group, the Super Smutty Book Club, was initially formed around the works of Rachel Flowers, the author of their favourite romance series. But after Rachel’s untimely passing left the series unfinished, the group slowly began to drift. This year, with her best friend engaged and other members backing out with half-hearted excuses, Elsy is determined to go alone.
When her car breaks down en route, fate leads her to Eloraton, New York—the very setting of Rachel’s unfinished series. Everything in this town feels impossibly perfect, as if straight from the pages of a novel: afternoon rains that arrive like clockwork, honey taffy that’s always sweet, and burgers that are always just a little too charred. Soon, Elsy discovers that she hasn’t just stumbled into a charming town—she’s stepped into the unwritten manuscript itself. Perhaps she’s been brought here to give Rachel’s characters the happy endings. It’s in Eloraton that she meets Anderson Sinclair—a brooding, mint-green–eyed bookstore owner whose gruff exterior hides more than a few secrets. Anders is the only one who senses the ripples caused by Elsy’s arrival, and he isn’t exactly thrilled by her presence. Yet despite his resistance, Elsy finds herself drawn to him, realising her own heart may be entwined with the fate of the story. What begins as a quest to bring closure to fictional characters slowly becomes something more profound: a chance for Elsy to confront her own fears, heal old wounds, and perhaps discover that happily-ever-afters go beyond the pages of a book.
The writing style is straightforward to follow, with smooth narration that makes the story engaging. It's a mixed-paced read—while certain plotlines moved swiftly, other parts slowed down considerably, to the point where I found myself skimming a paragraph or two. Character development is overall well, though I did find Elsy a little frustrating at times, particularly in her scenes with Anderson. On the other hand, the cosy charm of Eloraton and the presence of Rachel’s fictional characters added warmth and enjoyment to the reading experience.
Where the book fell short for me was in the central romance. Despite the premise, I couldn’t quite see the spark between Eileen and Anders—their chemistry felt flat, and the romance itself lacked the depth and excitement I was hoping for. That said, the concept of being pulled into the world of an unfinished manuscript is wonderfully creative and refreshing. For me, this imaginative setup was the highlight of the book, even if the execution didn’t always live up to its promise.
Ultimately, I settled on a 3.5-star rating. I would recommend this to dedicated romance readers who enjoy exploring love stories in all their forms, even if a few loose threads remain, as well as to readers intrigued by the idea of experiencing what it might feel like to step inside a book.
My Rating:
3.5/5
