Don't Worry: 48 Lessons on Achieving Calm by Shunmyo Masuno, as highlighted on its cover, is thoughtfully structured into 48 short lessons to ease anxiety. Rather than delving deeply into individual topics, the book offers brief, reflective chapters that gently soothe the reader through simple language and impactful quotes. Many of these lines are worth pausing over—so keeping a pen nearby feels almost essential.
Written in an easy, accessible style, it makes for a quick, fluid read. What stands out is the clarity of Zen philosophy—its ability to quietly awaken the mind and guide it toward seeing the bigger picture with calm awareness.
However, the book turned out to be slightly different from what I initially expected. A significant portion of its teachings is framed through workplace and business-oriented examples. While this does not take away from the essence of the lessons—as they remain universally relevant and adaptable—it does give the book a more professional, work-life perspective.
At its core, the book emphasises mindful use of time, understanding situations with clarity, practising gratitude, and recognising the importance of how we begin our mornings. These insights are presented in a way that encourages reflection and subtle shifts in daily living.

I would recommend this book to readers interested in Buddhism as well as those seeking growth in their professional lives. Personally, I approached it as a guide to everyday life lessons, but found that most chapters are written with working professionals in mind. This slight mismatch in expectation influenced my overall experience, leading me to rate it 3 stars. Perhaps a more specific title—one that reflects its workplace-oriented approach—would help it reach its most suitable audience without impacting reader expectations.

My Rating: 3/5
