In simple terms, Every Day I Read by Hwang Bo-Reum is a book about booksโwritten for those who love reading. It is a thoughtful collection of 53 short essays that explore the many small, personal moments that shape a readerโs life. The tone throughout feels warm and reassuring, almost like a gentle conversation with a fellow book lover who reminds you that reading doesnโt have to be competitive or pressured.
One of the most comforting aspects of the book is the realisation that readers everywhere share similar thoughts and experiences. Our relationship with booksโour joys, doubts, and habitsโis often more universal than we think. The author herself reads widely and references many Western writers she admires, which adds an interesting global perspective to the essays.
In many ways, the book serves as a guide for all kinds of readersโwhether you are just beginning your reading journey, are an avid reader, or someone hoping to rediscover the habit after a long pause. There is something here for every type of reader. The language is simple, the translation reads smoothly, and the essays are short enough to make the book a quick yet meaningful read. At its core, the book may not introduce ideas that seasoned readers havenโt already encountered. Yet reading it is deeply reassuring. It gently reaffirms the value of reading every day, for pleasure, and engaging with books in a thoughtful and personal way. As an avid reader, I found many reflections particularly relatable.
The author also addresses subtle social pressures surrounding readingโfor instance, the tendency of some readers to say they are โrereadingโ a classic rather than admitting it is their first time. I especially appreciated her reflections on book reviews, where she suggests being cautious of overly emotional reviews filled with exclamations like โWhat an amazing book!โ and instead trusting reviews that provide thoughtful summaries and meaningful excerpts.
Interestingly, some of the ideas discussed in the book echo points I have previously explored on my blog, Bibliophile Talks, particularly in my article about "how to start reading". It reinforces the comforting idea that readers often share similar struggles and joys.
The book is also filled with memorable quotes, thoughtful recommendations, and creative ideas for enjoying and documenting oneโs reading journey. Whether you enjoy reading multiple books at once, prefer a slower pace, or occasionally find your interest fading, the author gently reminds us that every reading journey is differentโand that is perfectly fine.
Reading should never feel like a race. There is no need to feel guilty about reading slowly or casually. What matters most is enjoying the process. The book also gently encourages readers not to be afraid of exploring different genres. Trying something new might lead you to your next favourite book.
For these reasons, Every Day I Read is a book many readers will relate to in one way or another. If you love booksโor are hoping to reconnect with themโyou may very well discover a part of your own reading life reflected within its pages.
I gave the book a 3.5 rating mainly because many of the ideas discussed were already familiar to me. As an avid reader, I already follow several of the practices and perspectives the author talks about. While the reflections were comforting and relatable, the familiarity of many points slightly influenced my overall rating.
My Rating: 3.5/5
