At first glance, The Whispering Delulu by Sohil Makwana appears to be a psychological thriller. I admit, I approached it with this expectation. However, the narrative unfolds as a science fiction thriller, offering different suspense that is equally intriguing.
The story follows Mohini, who awakens from a coma to find herself paralysed and suffering memory loss. She is entirely dependent on her husband, Dr Rohit. While he appears devoted, a seemingly insignificant detailโ€”a yellow pillโ€”plants seeds of doubt in her mind. As the narrative progresses, an otherworldly presence with its own purpose starts to surface within her. Disquieting changes follow: unusual expressions, altered behaviour, and growing unease. The question lingers: is Mohini losing her grasp on reality, or is something beyond comprehension happening to her?
What makes the narrative engaging is its exploration of how belief systems, myths, and stories can influence the human mind. The book subtly reflects on the complexities of consciousnessโ€”how fragile it can be, and how easily it may blur the boundaries between truth and illusion. Several unexpected twists sustain intrigue and keep the narrative dynamic.
An interesting dimension of the book lies in its integration of ancient mythology with modern science. It subtly suggests that elements of scientific thought have long existed within our traditional texts, and Cultural narratives add a layer of depth and authenticity to the story. The scientific and medical aspects are another notable strength. Readers familiar with the authorโ€™s previous works will recognise his command of these domains. Complex concepts are explained clearly, making them accessible without disrupting the narrative flow. That said, readers less inclined towards science-heavy content may find certain sections slightly dense.

Now, regarding the rating, why 3.5 stars? Despite its engaging premise and strong narrative drive, I found a few aspects that influenced my overall experience. While both central characters are well-drawn and layered with their own motivations, Mohiniโ€™s character could have been developed with greater depth. There are minor inconsistencies in the plot that attentive readers may notice. Additionally, her interactions with her daughter, Virtual Mimi, felt somewhat underwhelming and, at times, unnecessary, thereby diluting the emotional impact those moments were intended to create. Another factor was the pacing leading up to the climax. While the book maintains strong momentum for most of its length (around 200 pages), the final segment felt slightly stretched. The resolution, though detailed, felt drawn out, diminishing its overall impact.
Would I recommend this book? Yesโ€”with a caveat. It is well-suited for readers who enjoy science fiction thrillers, particularly those interested in scientific or medical concepts. While the author does a commendable job explaining these elements, a basic familiarity with such themes will certainly enhance the reading experience. Thriller enthusiasts, too, may find it worth exploring.

As always, this is an honest reflection from Bibliophile Talksโ€”respectful of the authorโ€™s effort, yet true to my reading experience.

My Rating:

3.5/5
