Anthony Wistern meets a rather dramatic endโ€”impaled on a spike during his grand 60th birthday celebration, meticulously arranged by his wife, Olivia. A man of considerable success and the owner of an investment firm, Anthony was not without adversaries; in fact, several individuals within his own circleโ€”including his familyโ€”harboured enough resentment to be considered potential suspects. Adding an intriguing layer to the narrative, a few chapters unfold from Anthonyโ€™s perspective, as he lingers in a limbo-like state, attempting to piece together the final hours of his life. Until he uncovers the truth behind his death, he remains unable to move on.

However, despite its compelling setup, the execution falls short. As a thriller reader, I picked up this book with great excitement, but that enthusiasm faded quickly. A few chapters in, the experience lost its appealโ€”largely due to the characterisation. The characters felt poorly developed and, at times, quite frustrating, making it difficult to form any emotional connection with them. Their personalities came across as arrogant and inconsistent, which further distanced me from the story.
Even Sleuth, a character determined to prove that Anthony was murdered, did not add much depth to the narrative. As an online crime blogger rather than a trained investigator, I found this angle somewhat unconvincing and lacking the authority typically expected in a thriller.

The novel also struggled with pacing. It moved quite slowly and lacked the gripping tension that defines the genre. I made a genuine effort to continueโ€”especially since I rarely leave books unfinishedโ€”but it became increasingly difficult to stay invested. Reaching the 200-page mark took nearly two weeks, and by then, I realised I was no longer interested in discovering who killed Anthony.
Ultimately, this turned into a DNF for me, and based on my experience, it is not a book I would recommend.

My Rating:

2/5
