Arjan never imagined that his passion for gaming would lead him into the heart of a real battle. A journalism student and a rising esports talent, he is preparing for the World Gaming Championship with his team—including Sahin, the mysterious and captivating player who has quietly won his heart. But when ISIS lays siege to Sahin’s Kurdish hometown, Arjan makes a life-altering choice. Leaving behind the comfort of virtual arenas, he embarks on a daring rescue mission into war-torn Syria. Here, the challenges are no longer digital simulations but brutal realities—warlords, shifting loyalties, and the haunting violence of war.
This time, Arjan isn’t competing for trophies or glory. He’s fighting for love, justice, and survival. A gamer trapped in a warzone. Will he survive?

The language is simple and accessible, making it an easy and fast-paced read. The narration flows smoothly, and the author’s writing style is engaging enough to hold your attention until the very end. While the initial focus on gaming may feel less appealing to non-gamers or readers who aren’t particularly interested in that world, it forms only a small portion—roughly the first 40–45 pages. After that, the narrative shifts into an action-packed adventure storyline.
Coming to the rating, I have given this book three stars. You may wonder why, despite its fast pace, easy language, and modern gaming-based theme, the rating isn’t higher. The reason lies in its treatment—it's very much like a “Bollywood masala” story. The premise of a journalism student falling in love with a girl he meets online is believable, as love in today’s world often blossoms virtually. However, his journey into a war-torn country like Syria, where travel is near impossible, stretched the limits of plausibility for me (at least). Of course, fiction allows for creative liberties, but a touch more realism would have added weight to the narrative.
That said, the concept is refreshing, especially with its contemporary backdrop of online gaming—a theme that resonates strongly with today’s generation. At its core, it’s a journey from game partners to life partners, told in a way that will particularly appeal to college students, teenagers, gaming enthusiasts, novice readers, and anyone who enjoys a dose of Bollywood-style drama. Avid readers of spy or adventure fiction may also find it enjoyable as a quick, fast-paced read. In short, The War Games is a fast-paced, adventurous, and accessible read with a unique premise, though best enjoyed by those who appreciate stories with a dramatic, cinematic flair.

My Rating:

3/5
