Set in the small village of Achipatti in Southern India, the book opens with a chilling incidentโ€”a devastating blast at an explosives factory. This factory, owned by a powerful corporation, has long been exploiting the villagers under the guise of employment. It is against this backdrop that the protagonist, Deva, rises in rebellion, rallying the villagers to stand up against systemic oppression.

Since this is a suspense thriller, Iโ€™ll refrain from delving deeper into the plot to preserve the intrigue for future readers. Instead, let me focus on the other aspects of the book. The language is simple, and the narration flows smoothly, making it a fast-paced and easy read. The story is gripping in parts, and characters like Deva and Vijay Kumar stand out with some degree of development.

Now, coming to my rating, despite the accessible language and engaging pace, I gave the book 3 stars. The main reason for this is the portrayal of Shravya, one of the central characters. At just 15 years of age, she is depicted with implausible maturity and influence, interacting with police officials, guiding legal strategies, spearheading campaigns, and essentially driving the narrative, all while the adult characters remain surprisingly uninvolved or passive. Her exaggerated agency made it difficult for me to stay invested, as her actions felt far removed from the realities of a teenager's capabilities.
Additionally, the technological and digital references do not quite align with the 2006 timelineโ€”a discrepancy that becomes apparent as you read and somewhat breaks the immersion.

On a positive note, the chapter featuring Archana and the bookโ€™s conclusion was more grounded and enjoyable, mainly because the narrative shifted away from Shravya's over-dominant presence. Her role would have felt far more believable and impactful if she had been portrayed as someone in their early twenties.

In summary, this book is likely to appeal more to novice readers, college students, or fans of Bollywood-style thrillers with dramatic character arcs. Avid readers, however, may find the inconsistencies and exaggerated characterizations more difficult to overlook. Nonetheless, itโ€™s an entertaining pick for those looking for a quick, dramatic, and action-filled read.

My Rating:

3/5
