Lana Mae Donovan and Carter James Callahan first cross paths at a college frat party, where fate intervenes unexpectedly. Lana, dating Carterโ€™s roommate at the time, discovers his infidelity that very night. What begins as a moment of heartbreak becomes a deep and enduring connection between Lana and Carter.
As Lana navigates the challenges of an unplanned pregnancy, leaving school, and building a life as a single working mother, Carter remains her steadfast supporter. Unbeknownst to her, he has loved her from the beginning, always waiting for the right moment to confess whatโ€™s in his heart.
Years later, Carterโ€™s acting career has catapulted him into the limelight in Los Angeles, accompanied by a playboy image that doesnโ€™t quite match the man he truly is. Yet, despite the glamour of Hollywood, itโ€™s Lana Mae โ€“ and the life they never had โ€“ that he canโ€™t stop thinking about. When a publicity stunt to repair his reputation spirals into a media frenzy, Carter finds himself accidentally "engaged" to his childhood best friend. He returns home to set the record straight, only to find that Lana Mae is unexpectedly on board with the arrangement. As past feelings resurface and boundaries blur, it becomes clear that what started as a misunderstanding might be the beginning of their true love story.

The language is easy, and the narration is exceptionally engaging, making this a fast-paced and enjoyable read. Each character is well-developed, and the chemistry between the leads is delightful. As someone who adores the friends-to-lovers trope, this story is a perfect fit. I especially appreciated that the relationship was not based on lust or sexual attraction but on genuine affection and deep emotional connection. Itโ€™s always refreshing to read about characters who fall in love with each otherโ€™s personalities rather than appearances.
Legs, Lanaโ€™s daughter, completely stole my heart โ€” sheโ€™s adorable, sassy, and wonderfully confident. I loved how she had her voice and wasnโ€™t afraid to speak her mind. Mindy and Luke (Lanaโ€™s brother and sister-in-law) were another highlight. Mindyโ€™s unfiltered, lively nature had me laughing out loud more times than I can count, and her dynamic with Luke was simply adorable. Luke's silly, goofy charm (especially after a few drinks!) added warmth and humour to the story. In this instalment, Annie and Liam played a less prominent role, which makes sense for readers familiar with the Donovan Family series since we met them in the first book. It was nice to see more of Luke and Mindy in this instalment.

Told in dual POV, alternating between Carter and Lana, the story beautifully captures both sides of their emotional journey, making it even more heartfelt and resonant. Readers who enjoy closed-door, kiss-only romances and fans of Sarah Adams' charming storytelling will enjoy this book.

My Rating:

4/5
