"His Risk to Take" is the second book in the Line of Duty series and serves as a companion novel to Protecting What’s His. It can be read as a standalone, centring on a new couple—Troy and Ruby.
Troy, a former Chicago cop turned small-town detective, is still grappling with the loss of his partner. One evening, he crosses paths with Ruby, a sharp and confident pool hustler, during a high-stakes game. Their chemistry is instant and undeniable, leading to a passionate encounter. However, Ruby’s past ties her up with a dangerous gangster—someone Troy is determined to bring down. This connection pulls her uncomfortably close to Troy’s case, blurring the lines between protection, desire, and danger.

The story blends elements of erotic romance with a light touch of crime thriller. While the plot is somewhat predictable, it offers enough tension and drama to keep the pages turning. The language is straightforward, the narration flows smoothly, and at just 130 pages, it makes for a quick, engaging read.
This novella is ideal for readers who enjoy steamy, fast-paced romances with a hint of suspense, or for those curious to explore the erotic romance genre without committing to a longer book. I’ve rated it three stars—not because it isn’t enjoyable, but because I prefer stories with more depth, stronger character development, and a richer plot alongside the heat.
